PRM Course October

Hi Hellfins

Who is interested in going on a Practical Rescue Management (PRM) course in October? It will sign off lots of Dive Leader lessons or can just be done as a very useful Skill Development Course.

The course is all about being ready and practiced for a rescue situation. You never know when an incident may happen so this is a great course to make sure you can help out your fellow divers when they really need it.

Dates:
• Theory – Wednesday 25th October at The Constitution
• Practical – Saturday 28th October at Gildenburgh Water

Amongst other things, you will learn:
• How to manage rescues using everyone and everything around you;
• How to rescue someone using ropes, bottles and floaty things;
• What to do if a helicopter is sent to help you;
• How to deal with the media in a rescue situation.

You will get:
• Lots of practice, under the guidance of experienced instructors, which will give you the confidence to manage a real incident;
• A fun day out practicing a variety of realistic rescue scenarios;
• If you already have some rescue management training, PRM is a great way to “practice practice practice”;
• Four Dive Leader lessons signed off if you are working towards DL.

To do this course you must have your BSAC club membership up to date and minimum qualification of BSAC Sport Diver or equivalent.

Let me know if you want to sign up by 30 September, email: bruno AT chillibruno DOT com

Thanks
Bruno

Allow me to try that again

Well, I should know better than to try and use this site from a phone

apologies for the gobbledegook message you just received.

It was meant to read
“Hellfins Soho Social REMINDER”

Soho Social Hellfins: I will meet you in the basement of the Spice of Life, 6 Moor St (nr Leicester sq), tomorrow evening, Wednesday 16 August, from 7pm. I’ll save a good table if I can!

£10 on the door, music from 8pm, food and drink available from the bar. It’s going to be awesome.

Any questions, find me at debbie at forwoods dot org
Hope to see some of you tomorrow

best wishes
Debbie

ps I have informed the Constitution that we’ll be much depleted in numbers or non-existent tomorrow night, so if you’re planning to turn up, I’d suggest you check if your drinking buddies will be joining you first! And know that the upstairs room may have been hired to someone else.

Dive Scilly 2018 (that’s next year)

Hi all,

This year 11 intrepid Hellfins went to the Isles of Scilly to dive with Dave McBride on his good boat Tiburon. As ever, the islands didn’t disappoint, with excellent wreck diving (on shipwrecks the 1790s to the 1970s), seals, squidgy stuff, spidgy stuff, and some wonderful ice cream.

The islands are almost in the middle of the Atlantic (ish) and so the fresh clean Atlantic water usually means we have excellent viz.

The 2017 trip was so good that we’re doing it all again next year. Cost for diving and very nice self-catering accommodation is around £450. However you will need to get yourself to the islands, and beer, food, air, and crisps are all extra.

Diving is suitable for dived-up Sports Divers and you’ll need to be comfortable to 30m. I’ve provisionally booked accommodation and diving for the week commencing Sat 23rd June (but you’ll need to be in Penzance the night before).

Drop me an email or nibble me down the pub if you’re interested!

Potential rib trip August bank holiday

Hi all – I’m gauging interest for a rib trip this August bank holiday (26th, 27th and 28th Aug).
But, this won’t be a standard trip; I am looking to spend the first two days wreck hunting / exploring unmarked wrecks.

There is an significant probability we could spend it diving boat shaped rocks… or if chance strikes: awesome virgin wrecks!

The last day will be diving some known wrecks… so we will see something 😛

If this floats your boat, and you haven’t already made plans, then drop me an email on joerobinson7 AT icloud DOT com.

If I get enough interest (and the boat is in working order!) I’ll set this up.

Cheers,
Joe

A day out at Stoney Cove….soonish

Hi all

I am arranging a bit of a refresher for Richard Banner to check himself and his gear out at Stoney Cove in the next month or so before we go to the Farnes in September.

Is there anyone who might like to come up there and join us for the day? Listed below are the dates that Richard and I are available to go up to Stoney, so if anyone would like to join us, they would be most welcome.

I won’t set the exact date with Richard, until I hear back… (or not, as the case may be) from anyone in the club….I will wait a week or so for any replies.
So the dates we are available to go up to Stoney are as follows:-

1……..Monday July 31st

2…….Tuesday August 1st

3…….Monday….14th August

4……Tuesday 15th August

5……Monday 21st August

6……Tuesday 22nd August.

Any interest do grab me in the pub, or sooner by email jh83ATbtinternetDOTcom

regards

John Heagney

Next Hellfins social: jazz! Wed 16 August

…and now for something completely different.

Wed 16 August
Hellfins jazz social
National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO)
Spice of Life jazz club, soho
doors 6pm, jazz 8-11pm
tix £8 advance £10 on the door
unallocated seating
full bar and food available

sir John Dankworth said of NYJO ” forget the word youth, this is one of the best bands you’ll ever hear”

NYJO plays a mixture of classic and contemporary big band charts, and I can confidently assert that they are tuneful, rhythmic and entirely listenable to, to the last. leave all your worst fears about modern jazz at home – this is great fun evening out and I hope lots of you can join us.

oh yes and I work there. so I may be biased.

Why I can’t get you free tickets: not only are we not the promoter on this gig (the venue are), but at this venue, the ticket income relates directly to how much our young professional (poor impoverished etc) musicians take home.

coming? great!
– buy a ticket: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/410748
– tell me you’re coming
– I’ll let you know what time I plan to be there so we can meet up and get a good table together.

love and jazz hands,
Debbie

Portland RIB diving – 15th/16th July

Rob Chaplin and I are running a dive trip on the weekend of July 15th/16th in Portland. Weather permitting, we’re aiming (weather permitting) to dive the M2, the Countess of Erne, the Alex Van Opstel and finish with a drift dive on Lulworth banks. We’ll be diving from Molly, the club’s RIB.

You’ll need to be a sports diver or above, and dived-up: the first dive of the trip will be the M2 at 35m. Exactly how many people we can take depends on what kit people take, so let me know if you’ll be diving single, twinset or rebreather.

Assuming we fill the trip, accommodation will be £48 per person, and boat hire will be £50 (so £98 total, plus any kit hire and transport costs).
If we don’t get 6 divers then the accommodation cost will be higher.

E-mail me at harryDOTbravinerATgmailDOTcom if you’re keen, and let me know if you’ll be driving and whether you’ll have any space to take a passenger. Please let us know what kit config you’re planning to dive too, it makes sorting buddy pairs easier.
Usual Hellfins T&Cs: By accepting a place on this trip you agree to pay the full amount should you need to cancel OR find a replacement suitable to the organiser and the DO. £50 non-refundable deposit to book.
