February 2005

Welcome!

Welcome to new Hellfins Lee, Leo, Trystram, and Emily.

Lee, Leo and Trystram are joining us as trainees, and Emily is an experienced Dive Leader.

We have a range of club t-shirts available, guaranteed to make you more attractive, and irresistible to the opposite sex. Email Faye to order yours!

Don’t forget that for just £5 you can also have your very own @hellfins.com email address. You can even try it out free for a month to see if you like it! Email Mark to get yours.

Training Sessions

Helen has been busy organising refresher courses every Wednesday in the pool to help people prepare for the new season. So far we’ve had DSMB and Distance Line sessions, with Lifting Bags, AV and more Distance Lines to come.

  • 23/02/05 - Lifting Bags
  • 02/03/05 - AV
  • 09/03/05 - Distance Lines

If you would like to come along to one of these sessions, or you have any ideas for future sessions, please get in touch with Helen.

Trips

We’ve got loads of trips planned for 2005, but they are all starting to fill up. Have a look in the diary to see what’s planned, and make sure you email the trip organiser soon to avoid disappointment.

It’s still not too late to think about planning your own trip - check out our trip planning guidelines here.

Gozo

This year’s Med trip is to Gozo, a small island just north of Malta. (That’s just south of Italy) The diving is rumoured to be truly wonderful, with great viz and water temperatures somewhere around 20°C.

Likely Cost: £170 + flights (Flights will be roughly another £188)

For this bargain price you’ll get:

  • Self catering accommodation
  • A jeep for every 4 divers
  • Taxi / ferry transfers to and from the airport
  • Tanks, weights and unlimited air / nitrox

Most of the diving will be shore based. You’ll need to cough up extra for food and drink, and any boat dives you want to do.

Email Ellie for more details.

Party Time!

The dates for the first Hellfins parties of 2005 have been announced! Make sure you keep these dates free!

Friday 1st April - Hellfins Easter Party

An evening of drinking, eating, drinking, dancing, and erm, drinking.

Wednesday 11th May - Hellfins Kit Auction

A chance to get rid of all your unwanted kit and get yourself a bargain, all in the name of fundraising.

If you’ve got any party ideas for 2005 let Rob know.

Dive Show (5th - 6th March)

The London International Dive Show is coming soon, and it’s a great time to buy all those new bits of kit you’ve convinced yourself you ‘need’.

Janos is organising meeting points throughout the show, so you will be able to seek advice from the wise old men (and women) in the club. On the other hand, if you’ve got a good idea about what you want to buy, then let Janos know so we can use our collective bargaining power to hammer out some bargains.

For those on a budget: everyone needs to have a mask, fins and watch, but practically everything else can be hired, either from the club or from a local dive shop.

You can buy for Dive Show tickets online at www.diveshows.co.uk.

Hiring Kit

The Club has a limited amount of equipment for hire. This is available for all club members to use on club trips only. The equipment is in good working order and serviced regularly. All the cylinders are tested and serviced to current EC regulations.

If you wish to hire any equipment you should e-mail the equipment officer, equipment@hellfins.com, with your requirements, the dates, place and the organiser’s name. This should be done with as much notice as possible. The Equipment Officer will make ready the kit for you to pick up at the pool. A list of equipment will be made out and kept in the equipment room. The organiser will be responsible for collecting the fees due. An e-mail will be sent to him/her so that they are aware of who is using club kit.

The equipment should be returned as soon as possible after the trip. It must be returned in good order. That means it must be rinsed and cleaned. BCDs should be flushed through as best as possible. All cylinders are supplied full and should be returned that way. If not a charge of £2.50 will be made.

If any item of equipment is damaged or develops a fault it should be returned and a note briefly describing the problem. If an item is lost then it is down to the hirer to bear the cost of replacing it.

While the club provides this service it is recommended that the member purchases their own equipment as soon as possible. The club organises kit evenings from time to time where newer club members can discuss their requirements with a retailer and more experienced divers with a view to buy. Not only that, you can play with some shiny new kit.

Above all, the most important thing to remember is to dive safely and have fun.

Just a quick reminder that NOW is the ideal time to think about equipment maintenance, before the dive season kicks off again in the spring.

Have you taken your regulators in for their annual service?

Do your cylinders need inspection?

How were your drysuit seals when you last dived?

Please don’t put these things off until the weekend before you start diving again; get your kit sorted out now for a safe and efficient start to the diving season.
