july 2004

You've probably noticed - from the emails that seem to arrive in you're inbox every day - that we have a new noticeboard!
Here's a round-up of what's on the board this month. You'll get a new one at the end of each month from now on. You can choose between getting new notices straight away or once a month by changing your profile. You can change your email address there too!
I guess the noticeboard is so busy because the club is so busy! Trips seem to be going out every weekend at the moment - sometimes two at a time. Still there's room for more.

SKYDIVES

If anyone is interested in doing a sponsored skydive to raise funds for the club this year please let me know. I don't need a definite commitment at the moment - just an idea of how many people might be up for it. It will probably take place in late August or early September.

Any questions let me know or talk to Nicky, Jen, Cleggy or Sid who all did it last year.

Congratulations

Well done to the following who have all gained new qualifications:

  • Open Water Instructor - Nic & Ian
  • Advanced Diver - Ed & Ian (Old and new syllabus - way to go!)
  • Dive Leader - Cleggy
  • Sports Diver - Ruth & Kathy
  • Ocean Diver - Rob, Karen and Dee

We are having a bumper year for qualifications. We have two new advanced divers, four new dive leaders, seven new sports divers, eight new ocean divers and over one hundred open water dives have been signed off. Hopefully we can do even more in the next few months.

Happy diving!

Ed

... and Thanks

...to all those who have organised and marshalled trips so far this year, without your enthusiasm the club wouldn’t be anywhere near as successful.
If you have a burning desire to dive anywhere in particular then look at the website trip planning pages, discuss with the DO and get planning!

Hard boat diving: 9-10 October

Let me know if you're interested in hard boat diving over the weekend of 9-10 October. Possible locations include Brighton, Poole, Weymouth or Plymouth, but I'd like to get some interest before I make any firmer plans. Its just after neaps and the water will still be warm; maybe a last chance for you fair weather divers to get your kit wet in the UK in 2004.

You'll need to be at least a sports diver and able to dive to 30m by October to be eligible. If your not there yet then let me know what you need to do.

Costs will be approx £60 for diving, something similar for accomodation plus your travel, food, etc. I'll be asking for a deposit up-front.

Your favourite shark expert and ours has been interviewed by diver magazine about an Australian Diver facing charges for killing a shark. You can read all about in on the Divernet Website.

Ten Reasons Divers Should Not Use Viagra

10 It increases your drag
9 Your wetsuit is tight enough already
8 Because a guy could really get hurt if he had to drop his weightbelt
7 1 pill to get you up, 15 kilos of lead to get you down
6 2 words: fire coral
5 You could accidentally penetrate the wreck
4 You would constantly be searching for blowfish
3 It increases risk of entanglement
2 Risk of "inappropriate" contact with the reef
1 Divers aren't supposed to rise quickly!
