Welcome

Well done us! £698 raised for club funds from the Auction night, and from a frankly impressive array of goodies! After challenging venue difficulties (the original pub seemed to think that us roughie toughie divers would fit between a pool table and a wall) we ended up in the Stamford Arms,

where the cheering after each successful bid was enough to confuse the football fans at the bar (who scored? What game are they watching?!)

We had marvelous items donated this year, including a black silicone frameless mask donated by The Scuba Store (204 Fulham Road, apparently lovely people, must be to help Shona with the difficulties she has with her wet bottom). The Sharwoods goodies, flags, Trauma shears (I find the name plainly scary), books, rib fees fins and much more - I wish I had had a camera for the visual treat of seeing Ian brandish a large dive knife in an east end pub!

Bidding wars ensued - particularly for the very generous offer by Sid of a day driving his Lotus Elise, which Mike eventually won after a prolonged effort against Rob - you remember Rob, the one who totalled a car driving it across the Sahara last Christmas! Sid went a very pretty shade of grey, but recovered after Mike won through!

Other items hardly saw the light of day - no sooner had Ian raised the Hellfins thong in the air, than Nicky wrested it from his grasp with a strangled ‘its mine!’

Ed purchased a ticket to see Chelsea play, but I guess it was the company of Tricky and Mike which persuaded him (why else after all?)

Auctioning of unusual talents was popular - Jo couldn’t resist snapping up Janos for the day as her, er, dive slave - little did she know that most weekends he does this for free - and Nicky offered her instructor services and weekend accommodation for a horsey weekend in the country, taken by Paula and Richard. Sid, needing some comfort by this time, plumped for an evening of culinary delights courtesy of Cleggy.

One item got left behind though - apparently a set of BSAC tables were found under a table in the bar, please contact Kathy if they are yours.

Dive Show

So, enough of the fluffy stuff ! The Dive Show will be held on 27th and 28th March at the Excel Exhibition Centre in the Docklands. There are literally hundreds of stalls there (you might have seen the write-up and map in ‘Dive’ magazine), so it is a great opportunity to buy kit at reasonable prices. However, do your homework - it is fast and furious, stallholders may have time to explain and advise, often not. You may have seen Shona’s request re bulk kit buying - let her know what you are interested in, not only as reduced price may be achieved by clubbing together, but also as she (and others at the club on Wednesdays) may have good advice for you if you are not sure what to get.

There are also interesting talks and both Janos and Sid have taken part in rebreather sessions (trydives) - this gets booked up quickly, so hurry if you are keen to do it - look at www.diveshows.co.uk.

Martha is Ready To Rock

The start of the season is just round the corner, our boat (Martha) is being serviced and dusted down ready for another season of safe and fun packed diving. We have many in the club who are qualified boat handlers, but like all our diving skills we need to practise and brush up on the latest techniques. So we can get the most out of boat and more importantly keep up our high safety standards whilst using the RIB.

Chris is organising a weekend in Poole to refresh the boat handlers skills.

The course will last a day and be run on both Saturday and Sunday, there is space for five students each day on the RIB.

The course will cover the skills needed to get the boat ready, get to the dive site, get the divers in and out of the water and get the boat back cleaned and secured.

If you are interest please let Chris know as soon as possible to secure your place, the cost each day to students will be £15, which covers the running expenses of the boat.

If you would like to join us for the whole weekend, plans are in progress for a days walking, on the day when you are not boat handling and a meal on Saturday evening, everyone is welcome.

There are also plans in progress to organise a Boat Handling course for

those who wish to cox the boat, details of these weekends will be

circulated shortly.

To book your place email Chris, in the first instance with your name, contact details and Saturday 3rd or Sunday 4th April preference.

Trips and stuff

The diary for the year is filling up! Anyone organizing a trip please double check the info on the diary to check it is correct. If it is not, or you want to change any part of it please email Shona, and she will sort it out.

Also please keep Shona up to date with how the trip planning is going, and who is hoping to go. All trips, planning, buddy pairings, marshals etc need to be passed by the Diving Officer (Shona) before a club trip goes ahead (and the Training officer if training is taking place), so please allow time for this.

A couple of new trips are added to the list - Tony (tonym@arcpet.co.uk) has volunteered to organise a couple for training purposes - 3/4 July and 14/15 August, venue subject to checking tides etc. The trip for 7/8 August is replaced by this 14/15 august, as Nicky and Ian’s wedding takes place on 7/8, and it is expected that few instructors will be available.

Welcome

Welcome to Rob Petersen and Karen Wooliscroft, who join as new trainees, and to Katie Lindsay who is crossing over from PAID [sorry, "PADI" - ed/] as a Sports Diver.

Looking forward to diving with you all!
