Mad People in Water?

So, anyone got wet this month at all?! No, not too many? I thought not...even Janos "Weather-proof" Suto got blown out and Mike "Well' ard" Wilkinson is saving himself for the December Trip to Oban. There's no stopping them is there?

For the less hardened among us, the Dive Planning Meeting gave us a taster of plans for next year. Highlights include early season trips to Red Sea and somewhere warm that'll be perfect for getting ahead with training for the season. Also two potential trips to Scotland, Scapa and the Moray Firth, and then late season warm water possibilities in Medes and/or the Red Sea. Plus a possible Welsh trip (I can vouch for the beauty and clear water of Pembrokeshire), and Swanage/other coastal trips practically every weekend.

If you have any further ideas, why not chat about them at the club - you never know who else might be interested, and could help sort out the details.

EGM and Dive plan for 2004

The dive planning evening was also of course our EGM, minutes for which are available. The main highlights apart from the dive planning include;

  • Ratification of the budget for the year
  • Election of James as Boat Officer
  • After a nailbiting heads to head finale, reelection of Sid as Media Officer
  • Safety points by Shona our DO. These included a sound advice on the use of incident reports, the importance of refreshing skills and plans for maintaining and improving the high level of safety and competence we have as a club. Shona will write more about these in the newsletter soon and Phil has offered to provide regular technical updates from BSAC (the first of which follows)

Technical Update

Read this! The latest from our gurus at BSAC HQ, this is practical, good safety stuff! Any questions to Phil, our National Instructor, who is our link on this.

BSAC Guidance on Air Management

I suspect the recent HSAC Sports Divers may be more up to date on this than some of our more senior divers - including marshals. This, I hope, will bring more of our divers up to date.

The BSAC guidance at Sports Diver level can be found in ST5 Air Planning and Systems. The key point is that we now operate the BSAC rule of thirds for our air planning ie:

  • One third air supply (for descent to half way or turn around point)
  • One third air supply (for second half of dive or return journey)
  • One third air supply (for ascent, leaving a reserve)

There is some refinement in for more advanced diving and I will find out the details of this and bring to the club in due course.

New Members

A warm welcome to Tim Below, a country member (no that doesn't mean he has cow poo on his shoes - although who knows), already a dive leader, advanced nitrox, and PADI rescue diver,

Rob Kitchen, also Sarah Malone, both starting out,

Neil Gardiner, a Sports Diver and PADI Rescue diver,

Dan Dutfield, PADI Open Water crossover

Congratulations
Congratulations to Sid, Nicky, Ian and Jen - who all passed their Theory Instructor Exams this month.

Well done!!

Out There in the Big Blue...

Biteback; Recent research published in "Nature" journal has revealed that fisheries have wiped out more than 90 per cent of the large fish worldwide. While politicians procrastinate, species such as cod are one the edge of extinction and fishermen are dumping tons of dead fish back into the sea.

One method of helping fish populations is to create marine reserves and no-take zones. Research has shown that fish stock in such zones increase by five fold in five years. Stocks in a wide area around will also be boosted.

After six years of EU planning for "Special areas of conservation", nothing has happened. You can tell environment minister Margaret Beckett now, by email to do something useful and designate marine reserves before it's too late!

One From the Vault

Hellfins were producing a newsletter long before the internet came along. Poking around in the dustier corners of the kit room can yield up some real treasures!

Over the next few months, we'll be bringing you some of the old articles from back when "Diving was dangerous and sex was safe". You never know, Spring may even come back out retirement and start doing the cartoon again!

For now though - can anyone identify the two hunky divers whose photos we've turned up?

And Lastly...

To those who remember Bob and Ellie, they are now in Cornwall and have been keeping up with the club through the newsletter and emails - they send their best wishes and Christmas greetings. Happy Christmas you two!

Next Month...
