Congratulations!
Congratulations Nicky and Ian. Yes, our Chairman and Social
Secretary have decided to tie the knot. A romantic weekend in a
castle in Scotland settled it for these two love birds. We're all
delighted and wish you all the happiness in the world for you future
together. |

On September 27th Nicky, Jenny and Chris will throw themselves out of an aeroplane to raise money for the branch and the Marine Conservation Society. On the 28th Sid, Nathalie, David (Nat's brother) and Cleggy will follow them. They are scared. They are very, very scared indeed. In fact if they don't raise enough sponsorship the may just bottle it - but you can help! First of all, you can sponsor them online. Once they've got to do it for the money, there is still a chance they'll chicken out anyway. Why not come along to offer some moral support. Nicky has promised a big barbecue at her parents' farm - they'll let you camp there too! Contact Nicky (nicky@hellfins.com) if you'd like to come and listen to the screams. |

The chairman of London Hellfins Sub Aqua Club, in accordance with the due notice required by the constitution, is pleased to announce that the Annual General Meeting of the club with be held on 1st October 2003. And it will be a laugh!
We will be electing a new committee, everyone is welcome to apply for a post, though one or two require special qualifications. All of the details are in the constitution but in summary the posts are:
Nominations go to Claire (
At the AGM the
Treasurer will also present the budget for next year.
Nicky is organising a venue and we will be
providing a few snacks to help proceedings along.
The formal
business complete, we will be getting on with the far more important
business of handing out the "Gregs". For those of you new to the
club a "Greg" award is a special little something to celebrate that
moment when you really screwed up, but thought no-one was looking.
Someone was. All of those embarrassing little moments will get a
mention, so get in there first! If you have a "Greg" to nominate,
let Nicky (social@hellfins.com)
know.
As well as the
Gregs, there are some nice awards you might like to nominate people
for too: Plus any
other award you would like to make up for someone you feel has made
an extra special contribution to the club this year. Again, let
Nicky know. |

Blown Out in
Swanage
“Bubble, bubble, toil &
trouble “How
about 16 August 2003?” “Why
then?” “Well,
the weather should be good at the end of July, Charity Shield will
be played the weekend before, the Bank Holiday is the weekend after,
it’s a long way off and if we go to Poole – we can CAMP!!” And so
it was set. The e-mails were sent, divers responded, plans were
made. The
great day arrived. The intrepid divers awoke to a grey, overcast,
and windy day with a Spring Tide. After a quick look in Swanage
harbour it was confirmed that the dive was blown out. To be fair
each had wondered whether this would be the case given that there
had been Easterlies the week before and some rain, which had stirred
the sea up to a gloopy, murky soup, similar to a London Fog of
1886. After
some consideration the more experienced among us came up with a
cunning plan – boat handling skills practise. To say I was nervous
was an understatement. But once on the RIB it was fantastic. Fears
were banished, encouragement given and we were bribed with chocolate
and the promise of fish & chips at lunchtime. The
morning was spent giving people a taste of helming the RIB, with a
trip round to Swanage Harbour. On route we found the wreck of the
trawler we should have been diving, then ‘kedged’ in the harbour.
The sea was rough and we had difficulty getting off the RIB at the
pier, but not as much difficulty as Phil, Chris and David had trying
to get from RIB to shore. The Hellfins Synchronized Swimming Team
could do with a little more training. After
lunch we headed back to Poole for more boat handling skills –
deploying and retrieving a shot and kedging. By the time we’d all
had a go it was time to head back. Sunday
dawned a beautiful day, the tide was out and belied the London Fog
sea state. Diving was still a no-no but those of us left embarked on
more boat handling skills. This time, picking up boys , (sorry mind
on other things I meant buoys), man over board, retrieving divers
and power failure on the boat. Thanks
to the patience, skill and optimism of Chris who organised the
weekend, and the gentle questioning and encouragement from Phil,
what could have been a washout turned into a useful and much enjoyed
weekend. Also a big thanks to Bruce who never complained once about
the number of times he was thrown in and dragged out of the water. PS if
you ever want to know anything about anchors – just ask Phil. He’s a
mine of useful information. Helen Disclaimer – |

Reef Doctor Calling
"Reef Doctor" Their main aim is to stop the destruction of the coral reefs on the S.W. coast of this beautiful island. To this end we are supervising the building of two types of artificial reefs. One type will support coral reef reserve areas and the other type will act as extra fishing areas for the local population to catch fish, to relieve the fishing pressure from the natural coral reefs of the area. They also work with the local university to help improve local educational facilities. This they have been able to do so far by helping to repair and upgrade the buildings and infrastructure and also by providing educational materials. In future they will be helping to upgrade the schools syllabus so as to improve the local understanding of coral reef ecology, which is absolutely vital for an area whose economy is heavily dependent on its fishing industry. They believe it is important not only to work to repair the damage already done to local coral reefs, but also to teach why the reefs are necessary to the very people who are at present causing them damage. The company was started in 2001 at Swansea University when Daniel Presman and Roderick Stein-Rostaing, decided to put together a group to work on a pro-active coral reef conservation project. They often do talks at dive clubs to raise awareness of the organization. If you would be interested in a talk contact sid@hellfins.com. If enough people come forward we'll arrange something. |
