Kit for Sale

It's always a pleasure to announce an engagement. Even though there has been a bit of a run recently, this one is very, very special.

On September 27th/28th seven of our bravest members are jumping out of a plane for charity. Find out how you can help in this issue.

Oh, and don't forget to play "Spot the Buddy" in our new website competition. Special Prize!

Congratulations!

Congratulations Nicky and Ian. Yes, our Chairman and Social Secretary have decided to tie the knot. A romantic weekend in a castle in Scotland settled it for these two love birds.

We're all delighted and wish you all the happiness in the world for you future together.

Sky Divers Ready to Jump

On September 27th Nicky, Jenny and Chris will throw themselves out of an aeroplane to raise money for the branch and the Marine Conservation Society. On the 28th Sid, Nathalie, David (Nat's brother) and Cleggy will follow them. They are scared.

They are very, very scared indeed. In fact if they don't raise enough sponsorship the may just bottle it - but you can help! First of all, you can sponsor them online. Once they've got to do it for the money, there is still a chance they'll chicken out anyway. Why not come along to offer some moral support. Nicky has promised a big barbecue at her parents' farm - they'll let you camp there too! Contact Nicky (nicky@hellfins.com) if you'd like to come and listen to the screams.

Date Set For AGM

The chairman of London Hellfins Sub Aqua Club, in accordance with the due notice required by the constitution, is pleased to announce that the Annual General Meeting of the club with be held on 1st October 2003. And it will be a laugh! We will be electing a new committee, everyone is welcome to apply for a post, though one or two require special qualifications. All of the details are in the constitution but in summary the posts are:

  • Chairman - Chairs meeting of the committee and acts as liaison with BSAC
  • Diving Officer - Responsible for safety, must be a Club instructor and Advanced Diver
  • Pool Training Officer - Organises pool instruction (Must be a Club Instructor and Dive Leader)
  • Open Water Training Officer - Organises open water instruction (Must be a Club Instructor and Dive Leader)

  • Treasurer - Keeps accounts and prepares budgets
  • Membership Office - Keeps records of membership and processes new members/renewals

  • Member Without Portfolio - No specific activities but expected to lend a hand when required.

Nominations go to Claire (secretary@hellfins.com).

At the AGM the Treasurer will also present the budget for next year.

Nicky is organising a venue and we will be providing a few snacks to help proceedings along.

The formal business complete, we will be getting on with the far more important business of handing out the "Gregs". For those of you new to the club a "Greg" award is a special little something to celebrate that moment when you really screwed up, but thought no-one was looking. Someone was. All of those embarrassing little moments will get a mention, so get in there first! If you have a "Greg" to nominate, let Nicky (social@hellfins.com) know.

As well as the Gregs, there are some nice awards you might like to nominate people for too:

  • Trainee of the Year
  • Diver of the Year
  • Merit Award (For the person who has contributed to the club in one way or another)

Plus any other award you would like to make up for someone you feel has made an extra special contribution to the club this year. Again, let Nicky know.

Dive Scapa Flow

This from Ed

I'm organising a trip to dive the wrecks of the German 1st World War Fleet
in Scapa Flow (Orkney Islands) for next summer. The plan is for 12 people
to do a weeks diving in July or August 2004. At the moment the people who
organised my previous two trips (who are excellent) are booking up fast,
but still have the weeks commencing 24th July and 7th August free, so am
aiming for one of those two weeks. The cost of boat charter, air fills,
tank hire, accommodation and full board (including packed lunch) is only
£294.50 per person plus travel (likely to be between £100 and £200
depending on how we get there), which is a bit of a bargain for some of the
best wreck diving the world has to offer.

The diving will be a dive to 35+metres in the morning followed by a 20+
metre dive in the afternoon and so unfortunately the trip will only be open
to Sports Divers or above with 50+ dives and who have previously dived to
35 metres. Of course you only need to be this qualified by next August, so
anyone nearly there now is welcome to come.

To book a place all I'll need is a £100 deposit, (rest payable a few months
before the trip). My e-mail is ed@hellfins.com and if you have any further
questions please feel free to contact me, or Shona or Claire M (as they've
been before). Or you can check out the dive company's website on
www.orkneydivers.com.

Blown Out in Swanage

“Bubble, bubble, toil & trouble
Gas compressed, no sign of trouble
When shall we two dive again……”

“How about 16 August 2003?”

“Why then?”

“Well, the weather should be good at the end of July, Charity Shield will be played the weekend before, the Bank Holiday is the weekend after, it’s a long way off and if we go to Poole – we can CAMP!!”

And so it was set. The e-mails were sent, divers responded, plans were made.

The great day arrived. The intrepid divers awoke to a grey, overcast, and windy day with a Spring Tide.  After a quick look in Swanage harbour it was confirmed that the dive was blown out. To be fair each had wondered whether this would be the case given that there had been Easterlies the week before and some rain, which had stirred the sea up to a gloopy,  murky soup, similar to a London Fog of 1886.

After some consideration the more experienced among us came up with a cunning plan – boat handling skills practise.  To say I was nervous was an understatement. But once on the RIB it was fantastic. Fears were banished, encouragement given and we were bribed with chocolate and the promise of fish & chips at lunchtime.

The morning was spent giving people a taste of helming the RIB, with a trip round to Swanage Harbour. On route we found the wreck of the trawler we should have been diving, then ‘kedged’ in the harbour. The sea was rough and we had difficulty getting off the RIB at the pier, but not as much difficulty as Phil, Chris and David had trying to get from RIB to shore. The Hellfins Synchronized Swimming Team could do with a little more training.

After lunch we headed back to Poole for more boat handling skills – deploying and retrieving a shot and kedging. By the time we’d all had a go it was time to head back.

Sunday dawned a beautiful day, the tide was out and belied the London Fog sea state. Diving was still a no-no but those of us left embarked on more boat handling skills. This time, picking up boys , (sorry mind on other things I meant buoys),  man over board, retrieving divers and power failure on the boat.

Thanks to the patience, skill and optimism of Chris who organised the weekend, and the gentle questioning and encouragement from Phil, what could have been a washout turned into a useful and much enjoyed weekend. Also a big thanks to Bruce who never complained once about the number of times he was thrown in and dragged out of the water.

PS if you ever want to know anything about anchors – just ask Phil. He’s a mine of useful information.

Our Man in Sydney

From Julian Denard

I have moved to Sydney for two years and am keen to do a bit more diving now that I am
here.  Has anyone dived with a decent club in Sydney, know of a club to join
(preferably on the North Shore/Manly areas).

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Regards
Julian

Reef Doctor Calling

"Reef Doctor" are a registered not-for-profit organization (company registration number 4035124) working as an NGO in Madagascar (www.reefdoctor.org).

Their main aim is to stop the destruction of the coral reefs on the S.W. coast of this beautiful island.  To this end we are supervising the building of two types of artificial reefs. One type will support coral reef reserve areas and the other type will act as extra fishing areas for the local population to catch fish, to relieve the fishing pressure from the natural coral reefs of the area.

They also work with the local university to help improve local educational facilities.  This they have been able to do so far by helping to repair and upgrade the buildings and infrastructure and also by providing educational materials.  In future they will be helping  to upgrade the schools syllabus so as to improve the local understanding of coral reef ecology, which is absolutely vital for an area whose economy is heavily dependent on its fishing industry.  They believe it is important not only to work to repair the damage already done to local coral reefs, but also to teach why the reefs are necessary to the very people who are at present causing them damage.

The company was started in 2001 at Swansea University when Daniel Presman and Roderick Stein-Rostaing, decided to put together a group to work on a pro-active coral reef conservation project. They often do talks at dive clubs to raise awareness of the organization.

If you would be interested in a talk contact sid@hellfins.com. If enough people come forward we'll arrange something.
