Welcome to Hellfins Dorn and Deborah!
Dorn Gibbons and Deborah Arnott have joined the happy crew this month. We're looking forward to getting to know you - in and out of the water!
Although the official deadline is passed there is still a possibility you could get on the best dive trip in the world ever.
Best diving in the world, with a couple of stopovers in places most people only dream of visiting. You can read the full itinerary on the website and contact Ian to try and sneak on.
Wednesday night pool sessions...
This Wednesday (19th) will be set a side as a session of fun and games, organised by our National Instructor Phil. Partly due to a large number of instructors being away skiing but partly, well, just for fun. Lots of enjoyable ways to practice skill and try things slightly out of the ordinary!
Please email me, Shona, (training@hellfins.com) by end of Tuesday to let me know if you’re planning on training on tanks each week. This will make pool session easier to organise, and hopefully mean lessons start promptly! (or let me know in the bar for the following week, but make sure I write it down!!)
If you’re coming along for snorkelling/swimming/tanks on off chance then there’s no need to mail. Hope this doesn’t seem too demanding, but it will make my Wednesday nights run much more smoothly, and reduce my terror when people I’m not expecting turn up!
Sessions for non-trainees...
Also remember LAST WEDNESDAY EACH MONTH (26 March next one) is primarily for use by people not currently training, to brush-up, refresh skills or play on tanks. As above please let me know if you’re planning to come, and if you want any instructors to help with anything.
People who’re training are still welcome along, but priority of instructors / kit goes to the oldies. (btw no-one has actually turned up for one of these sessions yet, so trainees are in fairly good position to get kit!)
Ocean Diver lectures...
Can you let Maili know if you want to come along for any of these Ocean Diver Lectures so I can give your name to the doormen. You will need to do all of the lectures before you can get signed up for Ocean diver
Tues 25th March - starting at 5:45pm
Weds 26th March start 5:45pm,
Resuscitation training
The club resusci-anne should be with us soon, so lifesaving skills for sports diver, dive leader and general can be done at the poolside once she’s here. Sorry chaps, this means no more CPR demos on live casualties!
Exams...
If you have completed all the relevant lectures for your course please let me know and I’ll arrange dates/supervisors/locations for exams. You will need to revise up on the notes you have prior to exam, as the pass mark is 80%!! Exams are generally max time 45mins, for 35 multiple choice questions.
Trips...
Volunteering to organise a trip is not as hard as it sounds! Unless you are an experienced diver your main responsibilities will be sorting accommodation (numbers etc available) and cars etc. ideally we’d team you up with instructor type to co-ordinate dive planning and other bits.
So please do volunteer, as otherwise the same few people end up organising all the trips, and going on them!!!
Practical Rescue Management...
There is Practical Rescue Management course running in London - Ham near Kingston.
If you are training to Dive Leader this course will cover off the Rescue Scenarios that you need to do - LT 4 and LS 2.
If you would like to go on the course, you need to send the following details:
Name
Address
Tel Number
BSAC Number
Diving Grade (you must be a Sports Diver)
To:
Roy Sherwin
10 Breton House
Abbey Street
London
SE1 3EF
He will then send you the course details etc. The course should cost around £25. He will ask for payment once you have received your info.
As well as the RIB trips already planned John Cousins has kindly offered to put even more together.
He lives near to the RIB and if anyone wants to go and dive, one day, two days as and when, give him a call and he will see if he can get enough people togther.
We don't have to arrange things months in advance, we just need to make sure enough people are available and we are complying with club rules.
Peak holiday times are not a problem.
We can dive from Shell Bay or from Kimmeridge. Accommodation can be arranged.

There's no doubt that a lot of our new members first find us on the web. So do a lot of other people too. Sometimes I look through our "referals" and I have to admit that, at times, I'm a little suprised.
We're a cool, sexy crew, so it's no suprise that going to google.com and typing "aya napa night clubs" ranks us number three.
And we're pretty broad minded, so maybe whoever went to search.msn.com and looked for "Threesomes in London" could have made an interesting new member - even if they did end up finding a stern article from the DO about how we "discourage threesomes while diving".
Sadly though, the poor browser who looked for "Spanking in Brighton" was misled - geographically at least - as we're all into neoprene! Now, where did i put that KY jelly...
If you typed something dodgy into a search engine one day and ended up joining a dive club, do let me know. I promise I won't tell a soul.
