FINE START TO THE SEASON

The diving season got off to a flying start this year with the, now traditional, trip to Swanage. The RIB was running like a dream, thank you Nigel and all those that helped get her ready in time.

You can read all about the trip in the features section. If you are planning a trip on the RIB in the coming months, it is vital that you read Nigel's Guide as a few things are quite different. You can find it at http://www.hellfins.com/news/ribupdate.

There is lots of exciting diving planned and some of the trips still have spaces available. For the full list visit http://www.hellfins.com/diary.

CONGRATULATIONS

On the 26th, Ishbel has gave birth to a baby daughter, both are doing well although we cannot say the same for the father. For those that like the statistics she weighed in at 7lb 14oz at 5:15 am. Congratulations you three!

Congratulations to Bob, Christoff, Cleggy, Eleanor, Jenny, Jo, Les, Paul, Sally and Sid for passing their Sports Diver exam.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Welcome to hellfins Ed, Maili, Jamie and Andy

Ed Collinge and Maili Buckingham joined us from the same York club as Shona. They are both Dive Leaders and Assistant Club Instructors.

Jamie and Andy came for a try dive and liked it so much they decided to join.

We're glad to have you on board.

NEW CLUB LOGO

And the winning logo is....

It was a close call but the shark won by a nose

The colours are slightly darker than shown, but as soon as we get a better copy it will feature on the web site in all its glory. The Sub - Aqua Club at the bottom will be changed to "www.hellfins.com"

The supplier of this winning design was Peter Pelosi who will receive a free T-shirt once they are printed.

Thanks to all those who voted and supplied logo ideas.

LEG IT FOR LIFEBOATS

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution launches "Leg It For Lifeboats", a 10k run at Wimbledon Common on Sunday 26th May at 10am.

If you would like to take part as a runner or volunteer to help out as a marshal, registering the runners, and refreshments etc... please call: Heidi on 020 7839 3385

We could go as club. If you are interested e-mail nicky@hellfins.com and we can sort something out.

LECTURES AT THE POT

Capital-Hyperbaric are holding some lectures on April 18th 7-10pm.

If you fancy going to some of the lectures (we haven't got to stay all night) and then on for a Curry & Tiger beers afterwards please let Nicky know by Friday 5th April

The topics are as follows -

  • Mariella Frostrup - Afraid of Sharks: the Cocos Hammerheads
  • Monty Halls - Uncharted Territories: The Life of an Adventure Dive Journalist
  • Dr Des McCann - The Bends & How to Recognise It.

Nicky has also be looking into organizing a chance to go into the decompression chamber. At present there is only one chamber but in the next 6 months a second one will be installed and we can arrange a visit. So watch this space...

UPDATE ON THE POOL

Just so we know what the latest news is. This is the current version (from Allan):

The good news!

I have just spoken with the project manger for the Shell Centre redevelopment and he has confirmed that the planning proposals are being put to the Lambeth Council planning committee in June. If they get through unscathed, the earliest the pool will close is now November 2002.

He also informed me that there is a proposal to build a new pool in Doon Street, just the other side on Waterloo Bridge in front of the National Theatre. Shell may contribute towards this as part of their contribution to the community in the planning process (bribe to Lambeth Council - I didn't say that). This may never happen or be years in happening but we can certainly contribute to the process.

The bad news! Wait until November!!

Check back next month for a completely different story (probably)

UPDATE ON THE WEBSITE

One or two people have been having problems logging on because they have quite old Web Browsers (Actually just Nigel -Ed). If you are one of them, do let the webmaster know of any problem you have. We will be updating the site with "backwards-compatible" code in the very near future.

Thank you to all those that have supplied content for the newsletter and the web site so far. If you have any news to share, want to write up a trip or have some photos then e-mail it all through to webmaster. I will even do the scanning for you if you do not have a scanner.

AND FINALLY...

No report from the ski trip (well not ones we can publish anyway), but so far we have had one photo submitted. We are pleased to present "Kev 'n' Mel in Courchevelle"
