Hellfins training

Divers training in our fabulous 3m pool, and on Swanage pier - the site of many Hellfins' first ever sea dive
Hellfins poolDivers at Swanage

These pages will tell you all you need to know about progressing your diving within Hellfins - whether you are new to the sport or have many years’ experience.

Hellfins runs an active training scheme throughout the year, with dates scheduled well in advance to enable club members to plan their diving and diaries.

We are lucky to have access to classrooms and a fantastic pool at Shell Centre, close to Waterloo in central London, every Wednesday. It is here that all pool and theory lessons are run.

Open water lessons are held at a variety of inland sites – with Vobster, Stoney Cove and Wraysbury the most commonly used – and also in the sea at Swanage, on the south coast, where we keep the club boat.

New to diving?

Every year Hellfins trains around eight brand new divers, so we’ve all the systems in place to ensure you qualify quickly. If you want to make sure diving is for you before committing to the course, then we offer Come and Try Dives.

These aren't a lesson, just an introduction to the club and a chance to get in the pool with some scuba gear on and see whether you enjoy it! These cost £20 and can be scheduled throughout the year.

The first course for brand new divers is the Ocean Diver course.

Typically we run one course each year starting in January. This is to ensure that new divers have the chance to get qualified before the main fun diving season which runs approximately May to September.

Already a diver?

Welcome! We accept qualified divers from all the main diving agencies at most points throughout the year.

We teach under the BSAC system (find out more) so if you have trained under another system you will need to cross-over to BSAC before undergoing any further training.

This is a simple procedure, which involves assessing which BSAC grade your current qualification is equivalent to, and two theory lessons.

Meet the training team

Hellfins training is overseen by a team of Training Officers who are appointed each year by the diving officer. If you have any questions about training will Hellfins, please email use or grab one of us in the pub! Currently the training officers are:
Nicky Leeds and Kathy Pelham

Facilities

Hellfins have use of the Shell Centre swimming pool in York Road, Waterloo on Wednesday evenings between 5:30 and 7:00 for pool training. The pool is one of the best around with a deep section of four metres. Members should note that Shell Centre operates a random stop and search policy, and also that it is essential all members using the pool are aware of the Evacuation Procedure.

We have 12 full sets of kit (tanks, regulators and buoyancy compensators) together with a compressor and 12 sets of fins, masks and snorkels for use by club members. This kit is also available for club members to hire for use on club trips.

Risk Assessment

We strongly advice club members to carryout following risk assessment before taking the plunge into Shell swimming pool with diving equipment

Hellfins Auction - Wednesday 15th September

Hellfins Auction - Wednesday 15th September

Horse bar - Westminster Bridge Road, SE1 7XG

http://www.horsebar.co.uk/

Don't forget that its the Hellfins auction in just two weeks!!!

NOW is the time to dig out loads of lovely stuff to auction and start
calling in favours from any businesses you know who might be
willing to donate.

At the moment we only have one mask to auction so its going to be over pretty quickly if you don't all start clearing out those cupboards now!

The auction is only as good as you make it, so please did out as much as you can.

We auction pretty much anything, it doesn't have to be diving related; as well as old dive kit people have donated books, games, DVDs, drinks at the bar etc etc. There is also a tradition of people donating their services such as a days diving instruction, carrying kit for a day, home cooked meals etc...

We also contact shops or organsations that we use regularly to see if they're willing to support us with a few freebies, such as a free meal for two - so next time you're in one of your favourite shops or restaurants, ask if they would donate something.

IMPORTANT: The auction is very close to the AGM this year, and we need to get all the cash in before then to close the budget before the next year starts. Therefore it will be cash or cheque only on the night, with the only exceptions being really highly priced items. There will be no online transfers for £4.50! There is a cash machine opposite the Horse so Konrad will be marching you there himself!

Thanks!

Look forward to seeing you all there....

Katie

Spread the word - Hellfins is recruiting new trainees

All,

Please help Hellfins to recruit new trainees!

At committee last week we agreed to make a real push to recruit new members. Not salty sea-dog experienced divers (although they're more than welcome), but trainees who are brand new to diving and also divers who've perhaps qualified with other agencies abroad

But we need your help. It would be really great if you could:

See if your friends / work colleagues are interested in learning to dive

Update your status on The Facebook to something along the lines of "Fred is looking for more people to join Hellfins, the best dive club in the world. Ever wanted to learn how to dive? Then get in touch

Let the committee know about any bright ideas you have - there must be more.

Please get in contact with Janos [1] in the usual way [2] if you have any questions, other bright ideas, or potential new members.

We're also running a weekend of pool and theory training on 18th / 19th September, so it would be nice, but not essential, if new members could make that.

----

[1] - Janos will be answering to the name of "Jayne" while the real Jayne is off getting married. He quite likes it.

Day trips out of Brighton

All,

We're planning some day trips out of Brighton next year.

We'd like to do day trips because:
 - You can drive there and back in a day.
 - It saves on accommodation costs
 - It allows 'other committments' that weekend

We've booked the best boat on the South Coast - the massive Channel Diver. Janos assures us that this boat can comfortably take 12 divers with lots of technical kit, so it should almost big enough for the faff that Hellfins bring with them. It also has a proven ability to outrun French fishermen.

More details of the boat can be found here: www.channeldiving.co.uk
The cost of each day will be around £50.

There are three dates in the diary

Saturday 4th June - contact Clare - ClareREMOVEBarker40@hotmail.com
Sunday 3rd July - contact Matt - mattREMOVE_j_williams@hotmail.com
Saturday 3rd September - contact Matt - mattREMOVE_j_williams@hotmail.com

There are plenty of great wrecks in the area, and we'll decide which one we're doing closer to the time. However we expect it to be in the 30m range so should be (or expect to be) a dived up Sports Diver by the time of the trip.

I say this every year, but the auction makes me very nervous as we get all the donations in at the last minute, so this is a plea from me, let me know asap if you have anything to donate so that I don't have a mini meltdown!

Thanks!

Look forward to seeing you all there....
