People often ask us the same questions so this ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ section may help answer some of yours! Click on one of the questions below for an answer. If you can’t find the question you want answered ask us a new one!

Or you might me able to find the answer somewhere else on the website

How do I join?

Get in touch with Tony and arrange to come down to the pool / bar to meet the club. You’ll get all the info/forms you need for joining then. Likewise, if you would like to have a try dive before taking the plunge, just email Tony and he'll organise everything for you.

When does your next course start?

We train continuously within the club, so you can start anytime you want!

I wear glasses / contact lenses can I still dive?

Yes! There are several options, you can wear contact lenses whilst diving, or you can get prescription lenses in your mask.

I cannot make Wednesday nights, are there any other clubs nearby?

If you can’t dive with us (Shame!) there are plenty of other BSAC scuba diving clubs in London - with different club nights and times. You can also find details on the BSAC Website.

Who do I contact about try dives?

Get in touch with Dave and he will answer any questions you have.

I’m already a BSAC diver, how do I join Hellfins?

Come along! Get in touch with Tony to arrange a time and date to come along to the pool / bar to meet the club and see where we train. We can fill you in on info / forms once we’ve met up, and then you can decide if we’re what you’re looking for in a dive club.

I want to learn with PADI, any recommendations?

Here is a link to the PADI website.

Is BSAC internationally recognised?

Yes! Dive schools around the world recognise the BSAC qualifications.

Mostly, as a BSAC diver, you will be treated with some awe. PADI divers think we’re a lot tougher than we really are!

Do I need to come every week?

No! The club runs a very flexible training programme. As long as you let Dave (our pool training officer) know when you are able to make it to the pool he will plan the sessions and get as many people training as possible. If you can only make 1 week a month that is fine, but bear in mind it will take a long time to train.

Do you provide kit?

Yes! We provide all the kit you’ll need for use in the pool sessions. But you’ll need to bring your own swimwear and towel!

Do I need any kit to start?

No! we provide all the kit you’ll need for training. We recommend that you buy a mask, fins and snorkel early on, as then you can get used to some of your own kit. There are lots of people in the club who can offer advice on what to buy, and where to buy it!

Do you hire kit?

Yes. We hire out the Club kit for use on open water dives. We aim not to hire out masks/snorkels or fins, as we hope people will have brought their own before diving in the ‘Open water’.The Wellington, 81-83 Waterloo Road, London. SE1 8UD

Is there much of a social aspect to the club?

Oh yes! The club goes to The Wellington pub, 81-83 Waterloo Road, after pool sessions. We’re there from around 7.30pm on Wednesdays. Aside from this we also have lots of socials, ranging from sky diving to the Christmas party. These are advertised on the website and mailed out to club members.

Why are you called Hellfins?

When Shell was young, the MD in London, who was a fitness fanatic, realised that the two sports clubs that the company possessed at St. Helens and Finsbury Park, would be better amalgamated into one unit. He ordered the company to purchase about seven hectares of Thames-side real estate and combined the names of the two clubs, St. Helens and Finsbury into Lensbury. After many years, Shell decided to sell off some assets. The Lensbury divers were informed that they would have to re-locate and change their name to which they no longer had the right. The divers ran a competition to decide on a new name. The Castaways was popular, however, somebody suggested that the unused parts of the original names be used:- St Helens and Finsbury, and so the club became the Helfins, latterly Hellfins and now London Hellfins.
